Société Européenne des Satellites
Leader of private satellite operator in Europe

Mr Emile Bernardin,
Chief Engineer, project manager for electrical production and transmission

"Our MERLIN GERIN equipment has been entirely satisfactory, and it therefore seemed logical to entrust MGE with the protection of our applications."

Focus on SES
Société Européenne des Satellites is one of the largest wide band satellite operators in the world. SES is actively present in four continents. In Europe, SES operates ASTRA, the most popular satellite system for direct reception, currently broadcasting some 1000 audio-visual services and received in more than 79 million homes throughout Europe.
SES will connect the ASTRA and Sirius satellite systems in Europe with Asiasat and Brasilsat systems in Asia and Latin America, supplying world-wide connectivity by wide-band and high-flow satellite.

What is your biggest concern?
Our constant concern is to guarantee our customers 24 hours transmission of their programmes with exceptional reception quality.

Our challenge: power supply with zero breaks, accuracy at a distance of 36 000 km adjustment of reflectors and positioning of satellites in orbit (19,2° East), perfect image quality and sound reception with no interference.

Wich applications need protecting?
We protect highly advanced communication equipment, in terms of orbital location antennae, telemetry and TVRO (reception-only television) equipment, and a ground control station operating 24 hours/day, which ensures operation of our ASTRA satellites.
We ensure 100 % power supply for this equipment, with 3 possible back-up sources.

All our installations are backed up to optimise security: electricity generators, heat and power co-generation systems, 16 UPS and battery sets, etc. Our technicians are specifically trained at the MGE UPS SYSTEMS centre to ensure the maintenance of our UPS systems.

Why did you choose MGE UPS SYSTEMS?
Our MERLIN GERIN equipment has been entirely satisfactory, and it therefore seemed logical to entrust MGE with the protection of our applications.

We have had very good technical support and follow-up since 1985, when the company was created with the Comptoir Electrotechnique Luxembourgeois (CEL).

CEL has experienced all our changes and we have a very good relationship with their after-sales department.
They have been supplying SES since 1986. Delivery lead times and prices are high, but according to our choice criteria, service quality and equipment reliability are more important for the security of our equipment.

We also appreciate their highly professional factory acceptance tests which make use of extremely accurate measurement equipment.
