| PoE (Power over Ethernet) Midspan units are installed between standard Ethernet switches and the IP phones (or WiFi access points), without modifying the existing active network equipment and wiring. They add 48V DC power on each output ethernet cable, to remotely power all the phones in the building or floor, centrally from the switch closet. By adding a single UPS in this closet, one ensures safe power to the network switches and all the phones connected.
Why PoE Midspan?
Enterprise IT networks are undergoing major changes. One of these developments is Voice over IP (VoIP) technology which requires the same availability and voice quality as conventional telephones. A new standard technology, Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af) can be used to power IP network equipment such as IP telephones and WiFi access points using the existing local network cables. The combination of Power over Ethernet and UPSs addresses efficiently the issue of availability raised by enterprise VoIP. |
