Purpose

This procedure shows you how to delay the startup of Solution-Pac until after the Windows-98 or Windows-Me login screen.

In the default setup scenario, Solution-Pac is started from the Windows registry, immediately after Windows is up and running, which is before the login screen appears. Since the login screen appears during the startup of Solution-Pac, the login box is "grayed out" (de-selected as the "current" box) right after it comes up. The user must click the cursor in the password window to re-activate the box as "current" so the password can be entered.

This can be bothersome to some users!

This procedure will walk the Technician through the steps of disabling the registry startup command and of creating a new command in the Startup folder.

There is one caveat: After this procedure is implemented, Solution-Pac will not start up until after the Login Screen is answered. This means that if a computer is booted up and sitting at the Login Screen when the power goes out, the UPS will go to battery backup power. But there will be no software in place to gracefully shut down the computer until after the Login screen is answered and Solution-Pac is subsequently started.

Procedure

Suppress the registry key associated with PSP startup:

1.    Click on Start, Run…, and enter in the command "regedit".
2.    To suppress the registry key, you navigate to the "RunServices" folder:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current version\RunServices
3.    For most of our UPS models, the key to suppress is the "PSP" key that contains the command:
C:\Upsman\PSP\PSP.EXE -s -h -start com mon

For Pulsar Ellipse and Esprit UPS models, the key to suppress is the "PCTL" key that contains the command:
C:\Windows\System\MGE\Pctl.exe
4   . To suppress the startup command, double-click on the "ab" key that looks like "ab PSP" or "ab Pctl".
5.    Now add a single quote mark ( ' ) in front of the command.
The command before modification looks like:
C:\Upsman\PSP\PSP.EXE -s -h -start com mon
The command AFTER modification looks like:
'C:\Upsman\PSP\PSP.EXE -s -h -start com mon
After modifying the command, click on "OK".
6.    After the box closes, the command in the data window looks like: '"C:\Upsman\PSP\PSP.EXE -s -h -start com mon"
Note the single/double quote at the beginning and the double quote at the end. This is normal.

Define the automatic start in the <Start> <Program> <Startup>

7.    To add a shortcut in Windows/98 or Windows/ME, click on Start, Programs, MGE UPS Systems, then right-click on "PSP Start" and select "Copy".
8.    Now navigate back to Start, Programs, Startup, and in the
next box (sometimes the "empty" box), right-click in that box and select "Paste". This will put an icon called "PSP Start" in the startup menu.
9.    You can click on the icon to start the Personal Solution-Pac agent right now. If you do not want to start Personal Solution-Pac at this time, you can simply close the Windows menu. You are done!
